Student government proposes new model

During fall quarter, with the change to semesters on the horizon, Student Body President Will Buchanan and Vice President Chelsea Kendrick, both seniors, decided that change was needed within student government. They worked with Student Activities Board (SAB) and Presidential Board to determine the purpose of student government, how well they were meeting that purpose, and how they could improve. At the beginning of the month SAB presented a new model for student government at the quarterly Leadershop to the house boards, and the following week they presented the model at a public Student Senate in Wanamaker.

Grassroots government

Principia students are speaking and student government has given us a megaphone.

Last week, Student Body President Johanna Publicover notified students of upcoming student government meetings with College President Dr. Jonathan Palmer and Dean of Students Dorsie Glen about the daily schedule. She asked students to contact their government representatives and share their views about what the new daily schedule should be so that their representatives could effectively express the views of students at the meetings.

Tapping into student leadership

The student government elections that took place this week came at a vitally important time for Principia. As we face significant budget cuts and a certain degree of student apathy, the newly elected student leaders have a chance — and, indeed, a responsibility — to perform an important service for the student body and the college at large. The new student government leaders must act to represent student interests effectively to the administration and ignite greater student initiative around campus.
