Emmanuel Jal speaks at Principia College
Friday, February 19th, 2010Peace activist Emmanuel Jal, a former Sudanese child soldier, gave a talk in Cox Auditorium February 11. Jal came to Principia as one of this year’s Ernie and Lucha Vogel Moral Courage speakers, and delivered his message of peace to an audience of students, faculty, and members of the community through speech and hip-hop performance. Jal described his transformative journey from anger and vengeance on behalf of his family and country to love for his fellow man.

In seventh heaven: Solar Car places in Australia
Friday, November 13th, 2009The Solar Car Team came in seventh place in the World Solar Challenge in Week 7, and they could not be happier.
The World Solar Challenge (WSC) is a division of the Global Green Challenge that consists of a race from Darwin, Northern Territory to Adelaide, South Australia. The course is 3,028 km (1,877.36 miles) through the Australian Outback, from the north coast to the south coast of the continent. The race started on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 25 at 8 a.m. and ended on Friday, Oct. 31. Thirty-two teams of innovative students and advisers from the most acclaimed engineering schools around the world traveled far for the ability to participate in the race.

Mortenson’s visit rallies Alton community
Friday, October 16th, 2009Mortenson, with his mission to support community-based education in rural Afghanistan and Pakistan, has reached near-celebrity status. Mortenson’s story is detailed in his book, Three Cups of Tea, a New York Times Best Seller since 2007. After reading Three Cups of Tea, U.S. Central Commander General Petraeus made the book required reading for all senior military commanders.
Students hired fewer hours

Friday, May 29th, 2009Principia has made a practice of extending a free education to students who come from various developing countries, a practice which could now be terminated in order to lessen mounting financial pressures currently facing the college.
Harassed
Friday, May 15th, 2009Students have recently come forward to criticize Principia’s handling of harassment cases. Though the college already has processes in place for dealing with harassment, students say the administration’s actions in facilitating resolutions to such cases have been frustrating and opaque.
Two students, junior Keith Duvall and senior Noelle Matteson, spoke with the Pilot and shared their individual experiences with reporting cases of harassment, as well as their common concern that it is too often left up to the student filing a harassment complaint to make sure his or her case progresses.
