A common question around graduation time here at Principia College is what it’s like to be a Christian Scientist out in the “real” world, where you aren’t surrounded by the Principia bubble of protection. I can’t really talk about what it’s like out there after graduation, but I can talk about what I keep in mind every time I leave campus.

Wishing, and hoping, and thinking, and praying
Friday, May 14th, 2010With just a few weeks remaining in my senior spring quarter, I am feeling like I’ve just started to get the hang of Principia. It’s kind of funny because when I started out at Prin I assumed I would transfer. It just seemed so small initially – such an easy nut to crack. But, like most experiences, the more time I have spent here, the more intricate everything has become – I have learned more lessons and discovered more opportunities. I figured the least I could do in my last quarter was pass on some of the most practical wisdom of my college career. Without further ado:
Cooking up inspiration
Friday, April 30th, 2010Guitarist Alex Cook is the sort of artist whose life moves with the tides of ideas and inspiration. Last week he graced Principia with music in the Pub, prayerful thoughts on creativity during a Quiet Time talk in Sylvester, and wisdom for artists of any kind. Although based in Boston, he tours with his paintbrush and guitar. Most recently, Cook has been writing what he calls “God songs” and performing at churches and house concerts on both coasts.
Ostracism, judgment denounced
Friday, April 30th, 2010A while back, I had a conversation with a few peers about problems we were seeing within both the Principia College community and the greater Christian Science community. The leading topic of conversation was judgment. We were all in agreement that we had felt judged or were at the risk of being judged harshly by our close community.
Inspirational study beyond Quiet Time
Friday, April 30th, 2010Students across campus are finding ways to deepen their understanding of Christian Science by forming discussion-based study groups.
Not reacting unless with love
Friday, April 16th, 2010When The New York Times article “Christian Science Church Seeks Truce With Modern Medicine” by Paul Vitello was published a few weeks ago, I had my fair share of scoffs and guffaws. But after a while, I realized that something was going to have to change in the way I react to this type of article.
Healthcare reform at Principia
Friday, April 16th, 2010A few years ago, a Principia professor’s son fell ill. Family members prayed immediately to see and hear God and to experience healing. Over the course of a week, the child seemed to become sicker. During that time, his parents reached out to two Christian Science practitioners and a Christian Science teacher. Each of these healers asked to be released from the case shortly after taking it.
The fundamentals of morality
Friday, April 16th, 2010I want to share some perspective I’ve gained on the purpose of this institution since leaving Principia, perspective on the cause it serves and what my experience has meant to me.
What a dog taught me about faith
Friday, February 5th, 2010This winter break I went walking several times with my mom’s dogs down at an open-space dog park outside of Denver. One of them, Chamois, loves to play fetch with the tennis ball. We use one of those long plastic launchers because that ball gets slimy! Chamois is a very enthusiastic fetch player, which often works to her disadvantage. She will give me the ball, and tear off straight away in one direction. But she almost never looks back to see where I am going to throw the ball.
Sex, drugs, and alcohol – the bigger picture
Friday, November 13th, 2009From what I know about student life here, it seems that this quarter has seen a higher level of sex, drugs, and alcohol usage on our campus. I do my best to avoid the knee-jerk reactions or judgments that are common when that happens, and to get my thought to a place where I can behold the man that is attracted only to good.
