This summer at the movie theater

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Summertime is blockbuster season at the movies. Each year, major Hollywood studios, including Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, 20th Century Fox, and Columbia, fight over coveted slots in a competitive summer lineup, hoping to release their films to the largest audiences possible. Most will not become next year’s Oscar contenders, but these popcorn flicks are guaranteed to resonate throughout American pop culture, while entertaining moviegoers during the dog days of summer.

Terminator: a determined action flick

Friday, May 29th, 2009

By now, everyone in the world knows there is a new Terminator movie out. Naturally, I gleefully hurried to the Jamestown theater to watch the latest struggle between man and machine, this time played out with a grown up John Connor. Does it live up to the hype? Almost. Terminator Salvation provides pretty good action and has some thrilling scenes and special effects, but it falls short with moments of sheer absurdity.

Not south of the border — South St. Louis

Friday, May 29th, 2009

It seems that whenever I suggest a Mexican restaurant as a possibility for eating out, everyone becomes an elitist about what is authentic Mexican. Really, all that matters is that the food tastes good. This week I dined at Arcelia’s in Lafayette Square. It may not be in a border town in Texas, but it will do for those looking for a good meal.

Nuts and Bolts 05.29.09

Friday, May 29th, 2009

After reviewing cars that were fast and probably had a carbon footprint on the bigger side, it was time for a change — a change to please all those environmentally-minded auto lovers. I set out to get a look at the new Ford Fusion Hybrid, the Honda Insight, and the Toyota Prius.

Sex, communication and the environment

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Instead of always being with or behind the times, shouldn’t Principia aim to be consistently ahead of the times? I think that if we are honest with ourselves, we can see that Principia is not all that it can be, just as when we look at Principia as it was in the past, we know that it was not all that it could have been. Leaping forward may be disruptive, but so was the implementation of the Internet, the civil rights movement, and the discovery of Christian Science. There are several key things I think must be fulfilled if Principia is to ever reach its full potential: gay rights, carbon neutral sustainability, and direct confrontation.

Something to show for it

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Well, here we are at the end of another school year. If you’re anything like me, you are wildly finishing papers, studying, and making those final social plans happen that you swore you would squeeze in back in second week. And, you’re living in a wasteland. It always ends up that Wednesday of ninth week is the last day I ever put away any article of clothing or sort through a single paper under the guise that “from this point on, I might as well be packing.” Oh, what fond memories I have of quarters of old — shoving piles of T-shirts into plastic bags and cramming them accidentally into my car along with several electrical appliances I should leave here and books I should have returned. As I look around at my junk piling up, it is hard to believe that at some point I desired each individual thing. Now, all I desire is to see it launched off the bluffs.

Can a Christian Scientist support war?

Friday, May 29th, 2009

I know Christian Scientists who support specific wars for various reasons and some who do not support war under any circumstance. Having never heard of a Christian Science position on war and living in a country involved in a war, it seems important and timely to get a strong grasp on whether or not war can fit into our spiritual beliefs.
